Reminder about Internet Routers: Buy Only Our Recommended Models
Amazon Prime Day and similar electronic sales are coming up soon, and in celebration, a lot of articles are appearing in major news sites encouraging people to get the latest and greatest internet router models.
You should pretty much ignore all those articles.
That’s because LCWA, to cover 400 square miles of very rural land, uses a rooftop radio-based network. And that means its technology is very different from 95% of home internet suppliers in the US, and so has very different router requirements too.
Our main requirement is this: don’t get a 5Ghz router. We explain why at this article. Unfortunately, nearly all routers promoted by the press these days are 5Ghz routers.
If your router is older than say 3 to 5 years, an upgrade is not a bad idea. But the best solution is to ignore the lure of fancy new routers and instead get (directly from us) our standard model: the Ubiquiti airCube ISP. We explain why in this article. It’s a good router, and one main reason we use it is because it enables LCWA to run remote diagnostics through it, which helps you clear up many internet issues without you paying for a costly home visit by a technician.
If You Have Special Requirements
For those of you with more demanding home network requirements (like covering a larger home), we have other router and mesh system recommendations too. They are all very carefully chosen to avoid the 5Ghz issue and so will work with the LCWA network. Contact us if you have special requirements.
So thank you for following our router recommendations! It really will make your use of LCWA internet much more successful.
