The LCWA President’s Letter, July 2018
Dear Member:
Welcome to the second of my new series of monthly newsletters about LCWA. As part of this series, I’ve decided to profile various members and volunteers of our LCWA community—to emphasize the human element of this organization that sometimes gets lost under its technology focus. My first profile is on Jerry Zollars—you will see that profile directly below. After that I am announcing two new volunteer positions I hope you might consider. And finally, I end with some news about our network. Enjoy the newsletter!

Jerry Zollars, Long-Term Volunteer
My longtime friend and outgoing LCWA treasurer, Jerry Zollars, is a great example of an energized and dedicated volunteer. He loves New Mexico and has made decades of contributions to the Santa Fe Region. Jerry joined LCWA in 2004, one year after LCWA was founded. He was member number 70 (we are now at 560 members). Within a year he volunteered to be Treasurer and has held that role for 13 years. He is retiring from that role in August.
Volunteer Needed: Access Point Expert (Trainee Role)
Did you know that we have 118 Access Points at 48 sites in our LCWA network? A lot of these are, simply put, small radio setups that sit on top of house rooftops (and on some small towers), as well as a few key sites that aggregate traffic from surrounding sites. Together they relay our Internet traffic across our rural Santa Fe County service area. These are what make your Internet access possible.

Volunteer Opportunity: 1-800 Support Line Coordinators
LCWA has a 1-800 number that members call if they are experiencing issues with their LCWA Internet access. We need volunteers to help manage that number and others to help monitor it. You can do this from your home and this will only require a few hours a month. You do not need to be technically oriented (though it helps)! You primarily need to have a good rapport with people and a clear phone voice. You’ll meet a lot of interesting people and receive a lot of positive attention!
Technology Wins and Losses in Our Local Wireless ISP
You know, I extremely am proud of our little local Internet Service Provider (ISP) organization called LCWA. Starting with humble beginnings only 15 years ago, we now cooperatively serve 560 members in rural Santa Fe—many of whom are rural land and homeowners who could not get Internet access otherwise. While keeping access fees low, we have cobbled together a very large wireless technology community using high-end equipment and mostly volunteer labor. With our rapid growth comes technology wins and losses, like occurred this month.
