Technology Wins and Losses in Our Local Wireless ISP

You know, I extremely am proud of our little local Internet Service Provider (ISP) organization called LCWA. Starting with humble beginnings only 15 years ago, we now cooperatively serve 560 members in rural Santa Fe—these are rural land and homeowners who could not get Internet access otherwise. While keeping access fees low, we have cobbled together a very large wireless technology community using high-end equipment and mostly volunteer labor. With our rapid growth comes technology wins and losses, like occurred this month.
Big Win
For example, there was a big win this month. As background, a year ago, after a major access outage from our only Internet trunk provider, we decided to contract with two separate trunk providers. That way if one of our providers failed us, we had backup. Well, last week, that decision paid off. One of our primary providers went down and our systems automatically cut over to our alternate provider. The result? A seamless and automatic transition and none of our members lost access.

But we do experience some outages. For example, three weeks ago, many of our members in Cerrillos lost access for several days. Why? The technology answer is that some of our Ethernet switches could not handle the increased loads that our users are demanding. As loads increased the switches just shut down. The trouble is it took us about three days to debug the intermittent issue and isolate the hardware that was failing. Our volunteers (and paid staff) finally debugged it and replaced the equipment, and all is good now.
Lesson: Be Part of the Community
Lessons learned? First, you, as a member of a mostly volunteer Internet coop, are fantastic for having patience with our tech staff to debug and fix issues like this. Second, you should consider volunteering and helping us! We have roles for non-technical people—please come help us. AND, we also have openings for technical staff. We know there are experienced network professionals in our community, so come join us.
