The LCWA President’s Letter, April 2019

Board and Officer Election Results

You may have seen the emails announcing the March board election results, and here are those results again: Ken Perlow and Andi Klein were added to the board. Dana Simmons was re-elected to the Board. Continuing members of the board that were not up for election this year are Rob Hausman, Joel Yelich, Mike Ault, and Michael Linenberger. You can see the full board of directors list and some information about each director at this link.

New Officers

What you may not know is that, at the first new board meeting (on March 11), the board voted in new officers. And I’d like to share those results with you.

New President

Writing the President’s Letter this month is me, Rob Hausman, as I was elected President. More on me in a moment.

New Treasurer

Dana Simmons, the outgoing President nominated (in absentia) and elected Treasurer. Fortunately, Dana has since acceded to both the nomination and election to this critical position.

Vice President

Joel Yelich was voted to continue his role as Vice President.

Secretary: Open Position

On being nominated, Ben Bradway agreed to continue as Secretary for a period of 90 days, during which we will be searching for a replacement. As a result, we have an upcoming open position: Secretary. If you are a member and you’d like to contribute to our LCWA community, I invite you to join us as the Secretary. It’s an interesting role, one of tracking and documenting the organization’s accomplishments and correspondence, and publishing the agendas and minutes of board meetings. Please contact me if you are interested at (president@lcwireless.net ). Please note that while Officers of the Association must be members, they need not be Board members in all cases. More details are available in the Association Bylaws which are posted on our website at www.lcwireless.net.

Thank You to Outgoing Board and Officers

I want to relay a huge thank you to the two outgoing board members: Ben Bradway and Jerry Zollars. Both chose to not run this year to make room for new board members. Both have played incredible roles in the success of this membership organization; Ben most recently as Secretary, and Jerry most recently as Treasurer. And their contributions go back years.

I especially want to thank Dana Simmons for his incredibly effective years as President. During Dana’s tenure the membership has doubled in size, and we’ve seen the growth of many new services. One reason for the success in serving all these new members is that Dana did an excellent job at recruiting new volunteers and in instituting a new automated membership system that includes credit card processing. And that’s just the tip of the iceberg for all Dana has done, so thank you Dana.

My Vision

My vision in my new role as President is simple: to improve the technical infrastructure and business processes of the LCWA network. As we are growing, we are slowly reaching the limits of some of our key technologies, and it’s time to improve them. For example, we will be adding more failover capabilities; that’s so if a segment of the network goes down, we can easily reroute internet access from the operational portions of the network. And we are looking at ways to remotely service membership equipment if it has problems. And a lot more!

Volunteers Wanted

Volunteers are the heart and soul of our co-operative organization. We are currently critically short of people to maintain some of our most important tasks. In particular, we need additional members to monitor the 800 number calls and ensure that members receive the support they need. Installation of new members and trouble calls also needs some help. For safety and other reasons, we strongly prefer to send out at least two people on calls to member’s residences. No great technical expertise is required to be of great assistance in this matter – just having someone on the ground to help when the ladder blows over with an installer on the roof, or to toss up the occasional screwdriver, makes the job safer and faster. Please consider attending our weekly coffee meetings on Saturday mornings to see where you can fit it – we always welcome all levels of participation. You will meet your friends and neighbors and have a chance to learn more about how the network actually operates. Eastside meets at La Tienda at 9:30 and the west side at Black Bird at 10:00 – see website for details.

Summertime … and the Lightning is Coming

I promise not to sing at meetings – but this refrain bears repeating. If you have already installed an uninterruptible power supply (UPS) to protect your radio and router – fantastic!  If not, please consider doing so. We estimate that 90% of all our trouble calls are caused by router issues, and 90% of those are due to power issues. So, you can inexpensively help yourself and the Association by acquiring and installing a UPS. They are available at many hardware and electronics stores in Santa Fe, and on the internet. It is generally recommended that the batteries in the UPS be replaced every three years or so.  It’s easy to test the batteries, just unplug the UPS from the wall socket, and it should beep and your radio and router should still operate. No beep or no router– dead batteries. Among other places, Batteries Plus on St. Michaels has the standard replacements. You can read more details about using a UPS at this link.

You Can Reach Out to Me

Feel free to contact me directly (president@lcwireless.net) if you have thoughts or concerns about our network, and how we can improve it. We’ll do all we can to meet your expectations.

Warm Regards
Rob Hausman
President, LCWA

I live in La Tierra Nuevo. HughesNet is killing me. My bills are over$1000/mo. Is there any alternative out here?

    Thank you.

We (LCWA) had some communication with the HOA out there a year ago or so about putting in a radio network for the community, but apparently they decided against it as we have not heard back from them. You might check with NMSurf, CNSP, as they have been busy adding APs for the last couple of years and may have coverage out there. Or approach your HOA and encourage them to take next steps for us moving our radio network out there.
