Improve Your Internet, Buy a UPS for your Router and LCWA Radio!

If you find yourself having to reboot your router or LCWA radio a lot in order to keep your LCWA Internet up, here is a simple fix: buy a UPS (Uninterruptible Power Supply)! They are cheap (less than $50), easy to install, and they will do a world of good for your Internet access.

What is a UPS?

A UPS, or Uninterruptible Power Supply, is a medium-sized box with a battery inside that you place next to your router. It does three things:

  • It provides an hour or two of power to your router and rooftop radio in case your power goes off. That means your battery-powered laptop can still access the Internet during a power outage.
  • Most importantly, a UPS box filters the power coming into your router and radio and keeps that power clean. “Dirty” power is common in rural Santa Fe, and it can cause you to have to reboot your router and radio often. It’s probably the number one cause of our support calls. So get a UPS!
  • A UPS will also provide relatively good surge protection to protect your router from lightning strikes. We’ve had a lot of members that needed to buy new routers recently due to lightning.

How to Buy and Install a UPS

And one at Amazon:

These are relatively low-powered ones (around 400VA, 250W), which are adequate for a router and rooftop radio (you just need a single UPS for both).

How to Install a UPS

Installing a UPS is incredibly easy. You simply plug it into a wall outlet near your router and rooftop radio power supplies. And then you move those power supply plugs for your router and rooftop radio to the Battery sockets on the UPS (Note: most UPS units have two sets of plugs, a Surge set and a Battery set; you want to use the Battery set). Now, your power is filtered! And if your house power goes off, your router and radio will keep running off the battery.

Note: if using a low-capacity UPS like the two listed above, do not plug other things into the Battery sockets on these; use them only for the router and rooftop radio. But feel free to use the Surge plug side of the UPS to protect many other devices from lightning strikes (computer, printer, monitor, etc.). If you also want to plug such devices into the Battery side of a UPS, for power backup, then you will want to purchase a larger UPS unit (800VA or more) to handle the extra load.

Also, during initial install, some UPS units require you to open a cover and connect the internal battery. Simply follow the instructions that come with your UPS.

Conclusion

That’s it! A UPS is an incredibly easy and inexpensive way to fix intermittent Internet connectivity issues. It will protect your router and radio from “dirty” electricity, and so prevent the need to constantly reboot them. And it could give you a few hours of Internet access when your power goes off. We highly encourage you to get one!
