Please Cease High Definition Video Streaming During the Covid-19 Crisis
Dear Members
You may have seen in the news that Netflix and YouTube are reducing video resolutions in Europe to keep the internet from being overloaded there during the Covid-19 crisis, due to so many people working and schooling from home.
LCWA has a similar request for you:
During this crisis, please stop watching videos in High Definition (HD) or 4K, and instead use the Standard Definition settings on your content providers.
See below for how to do this.

In the last week we’ve seen a huge surge in internet use on our network, to the point where our capacity is being maxed out in many parts of the network.
This is clearly due to so many people working or schooling at home, and more people at home watching movies.
HD and 4K movies require a very large amount of bandwidth, so your simple act to switch to a lower resolution will greatly protect our network. It will ensure members who are working or schooling from home can have the access they need to continue their work.
Again, see below for how to do this.
Other Tips
- If you have a Satellite TV system and were thinking of cancelling it soon to use internet content instead, postpone that decision—continue to use the Satellite TV. That will remove demand from our network and give you better quality.
- If you are setting up computer conferences or group calls, ask your participants if they can agree to a voice-only conference, rather than video; that will also help preserve our access.
More Details
If you’d like to read more about what’s going on here, and why our radio-based internet network is particularly susceptible to over-consumption of video, read this article.
Thank You for Helping your Neighbors During this Crisis
LCWA is a non-profit cooperative of members and volunteers, and LCWA members are great! Over and over we see examples of members volunteering to help other members, and we thank you for accepting this request in that spirit.

How to Limit Data Usage with Various Video Content Providers
