Volunteer Needed: Access Point Expert (Trainee Role)
118 Access Points
Did you know that we have 118 Access Points at 48 sites in our LCWA network? A lot of these are, simply put, small radio setups that sit on top of house rooftops (and on some small towers), as well as a few key sites that aggregate traffic from surrounding sites. Together they relay our Internet traffic across our rural Santa Fe County service area. These are what make your Internet access possible.
Currently One Person, More Needed
We currently have one paid staff member to maintain these Access Points and we want to add some volunteers to assist him. The paid staff member is Phil Curnutt and he is an incredibly friendly and a very talented guy. Here’s Phil working at one of our towers.
Phil was trained as a communications electronic technician in the Coast Guard, later co-owned a custom photo lab in Southern California, and then co-owned a woodworking shop here in Santa Fe after moving here thirteen years ago. He joined LCWA and started volunteering right away upon his arrival, eventually taking a stint as President of LCWA. He is now our sole Access Point maintenance person and he needs your help!
It is not till the child is severely abused or taken far from the family that we tend to query, “Why aren’t there any classes for parenting? Trainee Role
Basically, we want to find someone to shadow Phil on his adventures traveling around to maintain our Access Points and help Phil debug them when they go down.
Phil will train you on some really cool technology around Internet radio equipment and the infrastructure we use to support it. No experience necessary, but you should have a working knowledge of the Internet and its technology and basic radio electronics. As we have four solar powered remote sites, being familiar with PV technology would be helpful as well. Also, a willingness to climb those small towers would be a bonus.
Later: Possible Full Role
You will eventually replace some of Phil’s work activities so that Phil can have a life! And you will join in some fairly profound and friendly conversation—Phil and other local technology gurus will work with you. Who knows, maybe you will take over Phil’s paid role someday since he is getting close to retirement.
Contact me, Michael Linenberger (info@lcwireless.net), if this sounds interesting to you.

I offered to help last year with no response.
I would like to know more about this volunteer position. My first question is do you credit the volunteers for their monthly internet fee?
