Volunteers Help Put Up New Access Point on Old Forest Trail

New Access Point on Old Forest Trail

LCWA is constantly expanding its coverage, allowing more and more rural homeowners without Internet access to get connected. Expansion is done by adding access points—radio towers essentially—in strategic locations. The latest of those is the one put on Old Forrest Trail on May 18, adding LCWA access to up to seven more families. By the way, LCWA now has 562 members!

Where is Old Forest Trail?

Old Forest Trail, the location of the new access point (AP), is a road that sits high in the hills above the charming little residential village of Canada De los Alamos, which itself is about 6 miles southeast of Santa Fe at the very southern end of Old Santa Fe Trail (the road, not the historical route). This is a typical setting for LCWA; New Mexico residents love to tuck their homes away in charming nooks outside of Santa Fe proper, but then they ask, how do I get Internet access? The volunteer team at LCWA comes to the rescue!

Access Point Locations

You can see the location of the new access point in the figure below. This map, by the way, shows all our other APs (the teardrop symbols) and the blue dots are LCWA members. Click on image to see a larger view.

Volunteers in Action

Five volunteers helped raise the new AP, you can see some of them in the photos below. Such activity is a statement to the power of a volunteer organization and the sense of community that it engenders. And of course, volunteerism is what helps us keep access costs reasonable.

The Larger Story

This event did not just happen. It took over two years to accomplish. In December of 2015 with a request by Laura Jankowski, LCWA received our first requests for service in that area. Our inability to respond at that time had numerous reasons. In November of 2016, we were contacted by Michael Austin. His request set in motion the planning for a new access point as we were now able to overcome the past obstacles.

We would like to thank all the people from your community for their support. Michael for his many hours supporting the AP installation, Chris for his trenching machine installing the cable to the mast from the electrical post, and Charles and Cam for hosting our access point on their land.

I want to also thank the LCWA people that made this happen. Phil Curnutt, our network infrastructure consultant, who found a way to connect the new access point to our system and configured all the elements necessary to complete the task, and the never flagging support of LCWA volunteer Keith Swartz.
