LCWA Freezes All New Installs until at least January (and all speed-level changes)

UPDATE Dec 4, 2021: This freeze has now been extended through February at least.

Last Monday night (Nov 9) the LCWA board voted to freeze all new LCWA installs until at least mid-January 2021. Speed-level increases for existing accounts have also been frozen.

Why Are We Doing This?

The reason? Due to extensive COVID-19 stay-at-home work and schooling, the internet consumption of LCWA membership continues to soar, increasing more and more each month. The unfortunate result is that we are maxing out our backbone capacity as fast as we can upgrade it. This inability to stay ahead of demand is leading to continued speed degradation for our existing membership. All other rural internet service providers are experiencing this too, by the way, most far worse than us.

Is demand increasing that much? Well, yes. For example, overall internet consumption has grown 50 to 70 percent just since early summer. This is mostly from existing members using the internet more, but much of it is from new members joining. We were hoping it would level off, but that’s not happening.

Backbone Upgrades to our Network Continue

We are making extensive backbone upgrades, and we continue to make those to various portions of our backbone every week. We still hope to get ahead of this surge in internet usage in the months ahead. With that in mind, we’ve tentatively set mid-January as a restart point on new installs, but we will play that by ear.

Fairness to Existing Members

In the meantime, out of fairness to existing members, effective immediately we are not accepting any new internet hookups—to decrease some of that rising internet usage. By the way, that freeze even applies to people who contacted us weeks or months ago and who were put on a waitlist. Those people will be contacted to say this new freeze is now in place and January will be the earliest install date. The only exceptions we are making are for those few who have a specific install date already arranged with us and/or for whom equipment has been purchased—that’s only about 5 accounts by the way.

We are also freezing speed-increase requests from existing members. Those increases are of course causing the loads on our backbone systems to rise as well.

So, in case you know someone who was hoping to jump on the LCWA network soon, or in case you were thinking about increasing your speed level, the freeze is on. We think we made the right decision.
